American Express: Founders of Change

Empowering the next generation of Black women leaders.

American Express recognized the long-term potential for growth and profitability of Black female entrepreneurs.

Their way into this demographic was a commitment to accelerating their growth through Founders of Change, a grant funding initiative.

The Challenge

How could American Express turn corporate commitment into sustainable impact that doesn’t scream performative?

The Approach

I developed engagement strategy to align cultural investment with Amex’s business objectives. Leading creative strategy for Founder of Change grant recipients.

Project highlight

Out of all the projects we developed, one of my favorites was Meals On Us. The program provided immediate relief to food-insecure families while supporting female entrepreneurs through vendor services.

In partnership with CAMBA Inc. we enlisted chefs—Sohui Kim, Caroline Schiff, Christa Lynch, and Akhtar Nawab to deliver over 5,000 high-quality meals in partnership with CAMBA, INC. Meals On Us fed shelter residents restaurant quality meals offsetting eight weeks of food costs which allowed them to get caught up on bills, purchase necessary medications, and even opened savings accounts for the first time.

Through Meals On Us, American Express demonstrated how corporate initiatives can go beyond surface-level philanthropy to create systemic change.
